What exactly are microplastics?
Microplastics are tiny plastic particles that you cannot see with the naked eye. They are often added to care products, such as shower gels, shampoos, lotions, or deo, to give a smooth feeling or improve the texture. But did you know that these particles do not dissolve in water and eventually end up in rivers, seas, and even in our bodies?
3 reasons why microplastics are harmful
-
For your skin
Microplastics remain on your skin and can disrupt the natural skin barrier. Especially for babies or people with sensitive skin, this is not a pleasant thought. -
For the environment
Microplastics enter the sewage system through the shower drain. Water treatment plants do not filter them completely, causing them to end up in seas and oceans. There, fish and other sea creatures eat them. -
For your health
Research shows that microplastics have even been found in our blood and lungs. Although the long-term effects are still being studied, this is reason enough to avoid them.
How do you recognize microplastics in products?
The annoying thing is that they are often hidden behind complicated names on the ingredient list. Pay special attention to these terms:
- Polyethylene (PE)
- Polypropylene (PP)
- Polyethylene terephthalate (PET)
- Nylon-12 or Nylon-6
- Acrylates Copolymer
Do you see one of these names? There's a good chance they contain microplastics.
This is how you choose safe, natural care
- Choose transparent brands that clearly communicate that their products are microplastic-free.
- Go for natural alternatives with plant oils, shea butter, or coconut oil.
- Use certifications as a guide (for example Zero Plastic Inside or Vegan Society).
